Dairy Herd Recording Programme to Boost Local Milk Production

A Dairy Herd Recording Programme has been launched, which will better assist farmers to select the best milk-producing cattle in their herds and to boost milk production in Jamaica.

Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hon. Dr. Christopher Tufton, who launched the programme yesterday (May 27) at the Bodles Research Station in St. Catherine, said that since 1978, there has been no recording of milk production in Jamaica and this has coincided with a loss of productivity in the national herd. read more

$1 billion dairy rescue plan - Milk production at 20-year low

Legislation to establish the Jamaica Dairy Development Board, which will be charged with putting programmes in place for the growth and regulation of the dairy sector and connected matters, was passed in the House of Representatives yesterday (Dec. 9).

He has come into the picture at a point when local milk production is at a two-decade low.

Gov't to establish dairy development board

The government has decided to go ahead with the creation of the proposed Jamaica Dairy Development Board (JDDB) to develop policy and coordinate its milk production enhancement programme.

"Since I came on board as minister, we have decided that the dairy sector is too important not to have this framework for development," Minister of Agriculture Dr Christopher Tufton told the Observer Friday.
